In Memory of
Jim Haggarty
Our dad Jim, a man who was full of life, energy, intelligence, and health, was diagnosed with Benson’s Syndrome, also known as Post-Cortical Atrophy in his late fifties, after suffering for some time with various cognitive and visual difficulties. He died in November, 2022, at just 70-years-old. Benson’s Syndrome is understood to be a variant of Alzheimer’s, but it manifests quite differently, as the disease affects different regions of the brain. It also often sets in early, affecting people in their fifties and even forties. After his diagnosis, Jim eventually became legally blind, lost his incredible language abilities, and finally lost most of his gross motor abilities, which left him reliant on the help of his wife and children for everyday tasks. Despite these losses, Jim retained his sense of who he was, and who his wife, children, and grandchildren were until just before his death. We are hopeful that donations made on his behalf will support research for Alzheimer’s and its variants as well as provide support for those caregivers on whom people like our father rely.

Dear Haggarty Family - So very sorry for your tremendous loss. I am so saddened to learn of Jim’s passing. I worked for him when he first came to Nabisco around 1985. He was a wise and caring mentor, gifted writer, physical and cerebral comedian, and all-around mensch. I have such hilarious memories of his humor at the lunch table, his enthusiasm as we met with plant managers and their teams on business trips, and his managerial acumen.
